Google Ads conversion tracking: What happens after a click?

An ad click and a new customer are different stages. Conversion tracking makes actions that matter to your business visible.

A visual journey from search to a form and contact action

Separate valuable business actions

A quote form, phone-link click, WhatsApp click and purchase represent different actions. Choose the main campaign goal first. Clicking a messaging link alone does not confirm a sent message or a sale. Label the action accurately, and plan any connection to sales recorded elsewhere separately.

Verify the implementation

Google Ads website conversion setup involves the Google tag and the relevant event configuration. Check triggers when using Tag Manager. For a form, a successful submission can be a more useful event than a button click. Test whether the action completes, produces the correct event and is counted only once.

Distinguish primary and supporting goals

A page view is not the same as a quote request. Match optimisation goals to the business objective. Supporting interactions can explain the journey without being presented as equivalent leads. Check tracking regularly because changes to forms or the website can affect it.

Read data in context

Consider the campaign goal, reporting period and measurement method. Consent choices, browser conditions and tracking coverage can affect the data. A total count does not tell you which enquiries were relevant. Laccot Medya can discuss advertising scope and measurement needs together.

Before you start

  • Name actions accurately.
  • Test successful actions.
  • Check duplicate counting.
  • Retest after website changes.
